Features:
The Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB is one of the most widely used pickups of all time, featured as a factory standard in numerous guitar models across various brands and considered a top choice for replacement pickups. While the "JB" designation is often mistakenly linked to Jeff Beck – who did know Seymour Duncan personally – "JB" actually stands for Jazz/Blues. Interestingly, despite the name, the pickup has found its strongest following in entirely different musical styles, particularly among rock and metal guitarists who appreciate its exceptionally clear tone and high output.
The SH-4 is especially notable for its distinctive sound, with a strong emphasis on the high mids and a crisp treble response that allows this passive humbucker to cut through any band's mix without clashing with other instruments. Its tightly controlled bass ensures clarity even when riffing with heavy distortion, preventing any muddiness. While the SH-4 also performs well in clean settings thanks to the Alnico 5 bar magnet, the pickup does benefit from an amp with enough headroom to manage its high output. The 4-wire design offers flexible wiring options, allowing for traditional humbucker use or coil-splitting – for instance, using a push-pull potentiometer – which makes achieving clean tones without unwanted distortion much easier.
If the original pickups no longer deliver the desired sound quality or a clear, punchy tone with solid output is needed, the Seymour Duncan JB is an excellent choice. Designed specifically for the bridge position of guitars with fixed bridges or vintage tremolos and a string spacing of up to 52.5mm, the SH-4 excels in providing articulate, mud-free tone. For guitars with wider string spacing – typically 54mm or more, as found in Floyd Rose systems or other modern vibratos – the Seymour Duncan TB-4 Trembucker offers the same sonic characteristics, but with pole pieces spaced to match, ensuring optimal performance.
The Californian manufacturer Seymour Duncan is one of the largest suppliers of pickup systems for electric and acoustic guitars, as well as basses. The company founded by its namesake also develops pedals and other accessories for guitarists. The current product range is comprehensive and covers a wide variety of construction types. Pickups are available as after-market products, but are also often integrated by many guitar manufacturers, whether in the USA or the Far East (under the name Duncan Designed). In addition to the well-known models, such as JB, Duncan Distortion and Pearly Gates, many signature models have been created for and named after well-known guitarists of all genres, from Mark Knopfler and Joe Bonamassa to Yngwie Malmsteen and Dave Mustaine.
The Seymour Duncan SH-4 is primarily intended for the bridge position and pairs especially well with an SH-1N (PAF style) or SH-2N (Jazz) at the neck, though the humbucker can also be combined with single coils – ideally more powerful ones to maintain a balanced sound without volume jumps, with the SH-4 slightly lowered to compensate. For a clear tone with plenty of punch, a 500k volume pot, standard for humbuckers, is recommended, though if the sound comes across as too sharp, a 250k pot – typically used with single coils – can help mellow it out. While the SH-4 is designed for the bridge, this pickup can be installed in the neck position if the bridge houses an even hotter humbucker, like the SH-6 or SH-8, allowing for a more aggressive overall setup.
