Powerful all-tube combo amp

The Marshall DSL40CR boasts two channels, each with two different voicings. The sound of Channel 1 ranges from clean to crunch, while Channel 2 has two different overdrive options which provide a wide spectrum of distorted sounds. The amp is equipped with many useful extra features, including an emulated line out for direct recording, an audio input for playing back music from external sources, on-board digital reverb, and an effects loop which allows additional effects to be integrated. The three-band EQ has been upgraded to enhance its effectiveness, while the Tone Shift switch allows modern scooped sounds to be dialled in. Extra signal processing options are provided by the Presence and Resonance controls, which further shape the sound of the 40-watt power stage and its two EL34s. The result is clearly audible through the 12-inch Celestion V-Type speaker, which delivers outstanding definition and presence throughout the entire sound spectrum.

Genuine Marshall sound and more

The preamp stage of the DSL40CR is equipped with four ECC83 tubes and its two channels can be selected either via the front panel, the footswitch that comes included, or MIDI. The sound of Channel 1 (Classic Gain) ranges from shimmering clean through to a pleasantly dynamic breakup, while Channel 2 (Ultra Gain) covers everything from sizzling crunch to high-gain lead. Both channels have their own volume and master volume controls and share an effective three-band EQ, while the Presence and Resonance controls allow precise shaping of the power stage’s tonal response. The on-board reverb is also independently adjustable for each channel. In addition to the effects loop, the MIDI connection, audio input, and footswitch connection, the DSL40CR also features an Emulated Out. Last but not least, five speaker outputs are present which allow various combinations of 4, 8, and 16-Ohm speaker cabinets to be connected – should you require that extra power boost.

A no-compromise Marshall combo

If you love the real Marshall sound, you will definitely love the DSL40CR. This stalwart combo delivers Marshall’s classic all-tube sound and is equally suited to the rehearsal room, the stage, or the recording studio. The amp’s output power can be reduced from 40 to 20 watts and can thus be adapted to many applications, while its extensive features, such as the two channels with four different voicing options, high-quality digital reverb, effects loop, and cab-emulating direct/headphone output, make the Marshall DSL40CR a go-to amp for any guitarist looking for an extremely flexible, versatile, and powerful tube combo.

About Marshall

Marshall, the manufacturer from Milton Keynes in Great Britain, is an indispensable figure in the world of electric guitar. The tube amplifiers of company founder Jim Marshall († 2012) have been writing Rock music history since 1962 with names like Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton. The classics of the JTM, JMP, and JCM 800 series are still highly sought-after today, as they shaped the sound of overdriven and distorted electric guitar more than any other product. To this day, the combination of the amp and 4x12" cabinet - the "Marshall stack" - is synonymous with the energy and power of the Rock music genre. Alongside these landmark achievements, however, Marshall has always kept its finger on the pulse of the times and a close eye on the needs of up-and-coming musicians.

Versatile Marshall sounds

With its 40-watt power stage and 12-inch Celestion speaker, the DSL40CR can be used at home, in the rehearsal room, on stage, and above all as a hassle-free recording companion in the studio. Its Emulated Out features cab simulation developed by the specialists at Softube which allows the full dynamic range of the classic Marshall sound to be captured on computer without the need for complex miking.

Fantastic sound, flexibility and value for the money.
gcman105 09.03.2022
After trying to decide whether to go for a valve amp or something like a Katana.

I'm so glad that I picked the Marshall DSL40CR. I just love the way valve amps clean up when you roll back the volume. This is a very versatile amp, the clean channel is great and the crunch and drive the amp produces are good too. The amp has a 40 or 20-watt mode and I also use it with the Harley Benton PA-100 Power Attenuator so I can use it for practising at home.

In conclusion, I feel I have made an excellent choice. I can highly recommend this, it's plenty loud enough for gigging. If you have only used a modelling amp before you should really give a proper tube amp a try.

My DSL40 expirience
DrSteave 11.02.2022
I have used this Marshall amplifier on probably 2-3 month and also taking it out and played live maybe 5 times. There’s not been one gig where I’ve ever been concerned about its reliability. The stock valves have worked extremely well and it is great to see Marshall putting in quality tubes/vales to start with. This saves having to upgrade them because they put in junk right from the get-go.

I can foresee myself having this amplifier for quite some time. I’ve purchased and sold so many guitar amplifiers over the years and not have given me such a great sound without any pedals as this particular amplifier has. This has become my main loud gig amp and something I will take to play festivals with when setup time is important. The fewer effects you have on the floor the easier it is to set up. In loud rooms, this is my go-to amplifier. I haven’t been as satisfied with any other amp purchase this much with the exception of my Fender Blues Deluxe. The great thing is, I now have both and they are apples and oranges in terms of what they give me. If you haven’t tried a Marshall DSL40CR give it a shot but remember – TURN IT UP! I hope this review of the Marshall DSL40CR guitar amplifier has been helpful. Feel free to share it if it has been, thank you.

Faulty from the factory
Annoyedglorp 05.06.2025
Sadly this was defective from the factory. Suspect manufacturing quality issues related to the signal input or preamp. Research online regarding known issues and have a suspicion that the tubes are not being biased at factory, the quality of circuit build may be poor and the noise likely indicates a poor earth somewhere on the pre-amp or input to the pre-amp. Low output and noisy signal, including the effects loop, Marshall not very interested, but Thomann customer support have been pretty good, although feedback due to return under warranty could be quicker as no idea if it can be repaired or what the quality of the repair might be or when I might see it again.
For an amp that's had a guitar plugged into it twice, I'd prefer a replacement and I'm now suspicious of what else might be lurking inside the cabinet. Advice - check it as soon as you receive it, if it doesn't sound right send back ASAP for replacement otherwise it will be a warranty repair. I'm hoping the repair tech will spot any other manufacturing horrors and properly bias the tubes, which may result in a usable amp.
Return process was simple customer support made it easy to return.
Can't really comment on the features as not been able to use it.
Handling. It's really heavy, but Thomann made sending it back simple.
Quality-utter garbage from what I've seen. It's not difficult to build simple circuits. Should never have got out of the factory.
Sound. Again utter garbage. Totally unusable.
For the price, this should be an absolute monster, but not a complete nightmare.

Marshall at it's best
Stephen Mcphail 08.06.2018
First I would like to thank Thomann for all their help & advice on my journey to finding the right amp, they just cannot help you enough, kudos to all of them.
This amp is superb, Marshall at it's best.
I have an American Professional Jaguar, on the clean channel it brings out the best in this beautiful guitar, crisp & clear tones to a subtle crunch & everything in between, the classic crunch gives you THE classic sound of a fender guitar & a Marshall amp at it's finest.
The Ultra gain channel gives some great Les Paul / SG type tones, plus the presence & tone switch give some great nuances as well.
I have used this in my bedroom on the half power setting & it still sounds great at really low volume.
I have an outside barn with a purpose built stage & I have had this amp cranked up as loud as possible, & man is this thing LOUD !!!!!
Loud without losing any sound quality at all.
You won't need a tube screamer or any such pedal here, the only negative thing I can say is that the digital reverb is not that good, but to be honest I have not come across any amp with a good reverb. I have a Marshall RF-1 Reflector Reverb pedal that does that.
The two way footswitch is a great for switching channels & works perfectly.
The amp is solidly built & looks fantastic.
