A full bass response on a budget

With the KRK S10G4, the manufacturer has created with its fourth generation of affordable low-end action. This active studio subwoofer features extensive I/O connections and a flexible, adjustable crossover frequency of between 90Hz and 60Hz. 160W of power, generated by a 10" glass aramid composite woofer, delivers a maximum SPL of up to 117.2dB. With a lower cut-off frequency of 30Hz, this is more than enough to get the whole house shaking – if that's the plan, of course! Thanks to its Class D amplifier, however, the S10's low frequencies are still controlled and clean. The elongated port of its MDF bass reflex enclosure is located on the front, allowing the sub to be placed relatively close to walls – although the bypass function, which can also be activated via a foot switch (not included), means the subwoofer can alternatively be set up a little further away from a wall.

Complete connection freedom

The KRK S10G4 has an almost uniquely comprehensive set of connections: The stereo signal allows users to choose between unbalanced RCA, TRS, and XLR connections for the input, and once the mono signal has been extracted for the sub, it can be sent to the monitors using the same connection formats. The crossover frequency can be set to 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, or 90Hz, with the signal from the sub and the monitors filtered accordingly with low-pass and high-pass filters. One advantage here is that the monitor signal remains unfiltered when bypass is activated on the sub, using an optional footswitch. Switches for polarity, ground connection, and input sensitivity further complement the S10's impressive set of features. In addition, the automated standby switch will save electricity, with the subwoofer only activating when there is an incoming audio signal.

A flexible entry-level sub

The accessible price and flexible connectivity of the KRK S10G4 make it easy for beginners to get lost in the world of low frequencies: The sub can be seamlessly integrated into almost any setup without any difficulties. This also means that newcomers don't have to worry if their other devices aren't all KRK's own near-field monitors. DJs will also benefit from the RCA/cinch connections, as some systems perform best with this type of connection. Overall, the S10G4 is suitable for anyone who wants to use their audio setup primarily to listen to bass-heavy genres, and is keen on an accurate representation of the low end: For EDM and Hip-Hop in particular, this is a must. Any music lovers whose current monitors don't seem to reproduce low frequencies accurately enough will find this subwoofer to be a wonderful addition to their rig.

Bring the bass back

Setups with smaller near-field monitors stand to benefit most from the KRK S10G4. Nevertheless, the room where this subwoofer is used should not be too small; ideally, it should be properly acoustically treated. Otherwise, the addition of a sub may actually worsen the sound quality. That said, when it comes to selecting the right monitors, the S10 is extremely flexible and forgiving – monitors from KRK's Rockit series are particularly well suited here. But there's plenty of user-friendly compatibility with other brands, too – thanks not least to the S10's four-stage crossover frequency. Either way, the monitors used shouldn't be too small: Since this sub's crossover frequency only goes up to 90Hz, monitors with insufficient bass reproduction can cause an uneven, muddy sound and inconsistent frequency response. Even apparently well-sized 5" monitors can be a problem, although they might claim to reproduce frequencies down to 60Hz. In this case, the smaller KRK S8G4 sub – which has a higher crossover frequency – is a preferable alternative.

Dit ding is zo ziek! Ik gebruik ze samen met mijn KRK Rokit 7 4G! Mis alleen een grill voor de subwoofer, kans bestaat dat je er met je voet tegen aan komt. Deze grill bestaat wel volgens de KRK site maar wordt (nog) niet verkocht.

Ik vind het een fijne sub wel jammer dat je het bescherming rooster voor over de woofer niet er bij krijgt en ongeveer nergens kan kopen maar verder echt top subwoofer

Very nice subwoofer, i love the new design and all the functions such as low crossover frequencies and bypass footswitch which is not included unfortunately, but sounds great overall..i have a pair of old KRK VXT 6 and this sub is a great bass extension.
