A solid first instrument

The HBJ-25 is an entry-level banjo, which is reflected in the low price tag, but also in the instrument’s features. Accordingly, there are no tone rings on this model, which makes it lighter and reduces vibrations, making the sound “gentler”. The body, crafted from Sapele mahogany, has a diameter of 11 inches, while the Nato neck has a glued fingerboard made from blackwood (specially treated pine). The HBJ-25 has a 670mm scale length, which is pretty standard for a five-string banjo. There are four machine heads similar to those found on guitars and one special-type machine head to tune the fifth string. The head in turn is made by the famous manufacturer Remo and tensioned using 24 brackets – phenomenal at this price point.

Beginners’ bliss

While most banjos are rather expensive, the Harley Benton HBJ-25 is aimed principally at beginners who are new to the instrument, before they really know how much time and money they are prepared to invest in playing this style of music. Inmiddels heb ik meerdere instrumenten tot mijn beschikking van verschillende merken, maar dit is toch wel het enige dat ik eerst bekijk (bezichtig is beter) voor ik begin te spelen. Echt een mooi dingetje.
Dat gezegd zijnde, ik ben geen kenner. Toch klinkt het als een banjo, speelt het soepel en - ik speel niet vaak banjo - blijft hij goed 'in tune'.
Ik ben nieuwsgierig naar wat een duurdere banjo geeft, want deze is werkelijk een plezier.
Ik begrijp ook wel dat een professional meer en beter wil, maar als je eraan wil beginnen zonder enige voorgeschiedenis, dan is dit geen miskoop.

The banjo came really soon when i orderd it, it was pretty wel packaged and it looks really nice.

while tuning for the first time one of the strings broke, i would prefer if it came with a spare set of strings. But in all its a great banjo for starters.
