The Fun Generation PL 15 Sub A is the subwoofer from Thomann's in-house brand's PL line of loudspeakers, and quite simply one of the most affordable subbasses on the market. The PL 15 is the perfect partner for tops and full-range speakers that are lacking a little low end, although the sub's own frequency range is high enough that – thanks in no small part to the built-in stereo crossover – the separation of the signal between the sub and the tops is nice and smooth. The PL 15's woofer itself is – at 15", as the name suggests – absolutely huge for this price point, and although this does mean the enclosure also needs to be a decent size too, the sound it produces is well worth it. The sound can also be fine-tuned (assuming there are users who like experimenting with different subbass setups) with the phase invert switch.
The Fun Generation PL 15 Sub A delivers rich bass with an output of 250W (RMS) and a maximum sound pressure level of 125dB. The frequency response, taking it from the top down for once, starts at 250Hz and extends down to 40Hz. Two handles recessed into the cabinet allow the 30kg unit to be moved to the stage. Its connections, all of them XLR sockets, are located on the rear panel: In addition to the two outputs on the crossover control panel, which can be set anywhere between 40 and 250Hz, there are two direct link outs above the inputs, which reproduce the input signal unaltered.
The Fun Generation PL 15 A is an easy way to give an existing sound setup the full bass sound of a real subwoofer – without spending too much money doing so. In a couple of easy steps, this active subbass can be integrated into almost any stereo environment, bringing pro-grade features like its Class D amplifier and a ground lift, which helps eliminate the unwanted hum caused by ground loops. And because the PL 15 also comes with a phase switch, more ambitious beginners can test a whole range of different placement options for their subbasses. For bands taking their own PA on tour, the PL 15 can be kept safe and sound with Thomann's own water-resistant cover, designed to fit exactly this subwoofer perfectly.
Since 1999, the products of Thomann's house brand Fun Generation have been an integral part of the store's range. These products, which are made by renowned companies who also manufacture products for other well-known brands, provide a convincing combination of quality and reliability at reasonable prices. The product range includes music stands and other hardware, Bluetooth speakers, LED spotlights, moving head lighting systems, and complete active PA sets as well as LED effects, microphone pickup systems, cables, and splitters. Price-conscious customers in the field of lighting and stage technology are sure to find what they are looking for in this extensive product range, which includes over 160 items.
Two additional cables and a power source are all it takes to boost any existing sound system with the Fun Generation PL 15's rich, punchy bass. The standard configuration for setups without subs is to run the stereo out from the mixer to a pair of full-range speakers; with the PL 15 on board, the mixer's output should first be hooked up to the sub's two inputs. If it's a mixing desk with XLR outputs, a pair of Thomann's the sssnake SM10 BM microphone cables would be ideal. The stereo signal can then be passed onto the existing PA speakers via the subwoofer's Hi-Pass outs. And because low frequencies radiate almost omnidirectionally in a room, the subwoofer itself can be placed with considerable freedom – for example in a corner or under the stage.
