The ISA sound in an audio interface

Focusrite ISA C8X, studio audio interface

In 1985, Sir George Martin asked Rupert Neve to build a spare-no-expense mic preamp – that circuit became the foundation of every ISA product since. Forty years on, this is the first audio interface to carry it. In Focusrite's original blue, the ISA C6X is a 26-in, 28-out USB-C unit in a 2U anodised aluminium chassis. With two full-specification ISA transformer preamps on channels 1 and 2, and six ultra-low-noise Focusrite preamps on channels 3 to 8, the architecture is deliberately two-tiered: transformer character where the source demands it, and six pristine channels with plenty of headroom for everything else. Two ISA channels alone would account for a substantial share of the C8X's price if bought independently. Here, they anchor a complete interface. That's 24-bit/192kHz conversion with 125dB dynamic range at the line outputs, ten balanced analogue outputs, an S/PDIF port and two ADAT ports, three independent monitor groups, MIDI and Word Clock – and full remote control via Focusrite Control 2.

Two channels of ISA

Channels 1 and 2 carry the full ISA specification: Lundahl LL1538 input transformers – the same component Neve selected for the original design – with up to 79dB of gain, four switchable impedance settings (800 to 7000 ohms), balanced insert points for analogue outboard gear, and an electronic 75Hz high-pass filter at 18dB/octave. Step/fine gain settings, per-channel 48V phantom power, insert engage, high-pass, and impedance selection are all accessible from the front-panel rotary knobs and buttons. The ISA preamps offer two settings, each with a distinct sonic character: Console mode adds soft clipping for low-end punch; 430 Air, lifted directly from the ISA 430 MkII, introduces high-end shimmer via an inductor-based high-shelf filter.

Six channels of headroom

Channels 3 to 8 carry Focusrite's ultra-low-noise preamps – 69dB of gain, analogue Air mode for added presence, and variable Drive DSP for harmonic saturation. Auto Gain sets levels across all eight preamps simultaneously, accessible from the front panel or Focusrite's Control 2 software. The two ADAT ports add up to 16 channels at 44.1/48kHz – enough to bring a full drum kit, bass, and keys into a single session without any bottleneck; at 96kHz the ADAT count halves to 8 channels. Conversion runs at 24-bit/192kHz with 125dB of dynamic range at the line outputs; the two class-AB headphone outputs deliver 130mW at 33 ohms with 116dB of dynamic range, keeping performers comfortable through long takes. Twelve balanced line outputs support monitoring configurations from stereo to 7.1.4 across three monitor groups, giving the analogue path everything it needs before a single digital port is engaged.

Built for serious sessions

The ISA C8X is aimed at recording engineers and producers who track serious sessions – the kind where transformer colour on the lead vocal, a DI'd bass through the Lundahl, or an acoustic guitar through a well-chosen impedance setting makes an audible difference, and where the remaining six channels need to stay out of the way. A tracking session can be run entirely from the rack without opening a laptop – which matters when the talent is in the room and momentum counts. The eight fixed-gain balanced line inputs at +24dBu suit permanent patchbay installations: Connect outboard once, recall the routing in Control 2, and leave it patched. With its external PSU, and for a price that sits above project studio territory, the C8X is a centrepiece for a working studio that runs demanding sessions regularly. Studios needing more than two channels of ISA preamps can pair it with the ISA 428 MkII – four further ISA preamps that connect via the line inputs or ADAT using an external converter.

About Focusrite

Founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, Focusrite quickly made a name for itself with high-quality analogue consoles. Today, the company markets audio interfaces, mic preamps, consoles, analogue EQs, and channel strips as well as hardware and software for digital audio processing. The company is based in High Wycombe, England, and has won numerous industry awards. In addition to the Focusrite Pro line, the company also has subsidiaries that include Adam Audio, Novation, and iOS app creator Ampify Music.

Focusrite: Control, expand, recall

Focusrite Control 2 handles full remote operation – gain, routing, monitoring, tone-circuit switching, and session recall – from a desktop computer or mobile device, with simultaneous control of multiple Focusrite interfaces in larger setups. This is useful when the rack lives in a machine room and the engineer works from the control room. The two ADAT ports accommodate up to 16 channels at 44.1/48kHz (8 channels at 96kHz, 4 channels at 192kHz), S/PDIF, MIDI I/O, Word Clock in and out, talkback, and loopback round out the connectivity: MIDI for controllers and outboard synths, Word Clock for syncing to a studio master clock, and loopback for routing software audio back into a session for streaming, podcasting, or re-amping through outboard. The C8X ships with the comprehensive Hitmaker Expansion bundle as standard, which offers a huge range of tools for creating, editing, and mastering tracks, as well as Oxford Reverb by Sonnox, for immensely detailed control over reflections, decay, and spatial imaging as a whole. The whole package is backed by Focusrite's three-year warranty and 24/7 technical support.
