The EL8X-S Distressor from Empirical Labs consists of two single-channel analogue compressors. If the two compressors are linked when recording in stereo, however, it's not the case that the one signal controls the response of both channels, which is how many other compressors function. Instead, the control signal is itself formed from a sum of the two inputs. The result is both an exact centre and a warm vintage sound with tube saturation and opto simulation. Beyond voice processing, the EL8X-S Distressor is also suitable for a whole range of different instruments, with a variety of distressor curves that can recreate the sound of legendary signal processors. Three distortion modes can be engaged to add special nuances to the signal. In British mode, on the other hand, a more aggressive sound is produced straight off the bat.
The eight distressor curves of the EL8X-S are selected up with the ratio button. In 10:1 mode, the result is remarkably close to the LA-2A tube/opto compressor. In 1:1 mode, the signal still sounds incredibly warm and dense, even without compression. The Audio button is used to quickly toggle between the three distortion modes: The first produces warm distortions, while the second emphasises the second harmonics much in the same way a tube amp does. The third distortion mode produces an extremely smooth sound, like analogue tape saturation, by emphasising the third harmonics. The EL8X-S Distressor compresses with an attack of 50 microseconds to 30 milliseconds and has a release time of 50 milliseconds to 20 seconds. When the EL8X-S is used as a stereo compressor, the two units can be easily linked together alongside the conventional insert wiring.
The Empirical Labs EL8X-S Distressor gives high-end recording studios huge flexibility and depth in processing voices and instruments such as guitars, synthesizers or drums. Live and in the studio, both compressors can be used individually or as a stereo unit – to optimise drum overheads, for example. In 1:1 mode, peaks can be adjusted surprisingly smoothly. For those who have a small but sophisticated recording studio, the short and simple user manual provides practical explanations and simple tips for mixing. In live use, the Detector button offers quickly accessible practical features. There's also an HP filter, which can be activated to prevent the compressor from being triggered by pop noises during a concert. And if the vocals seem too nasal, the sound can be optimised with the Band Emphasis function.
Empirical Labs Inc. (ELI) designs and manufactures professional audio signal processing equipment used in recording studios, live, broadcast and other audio production facilities around the world. ELI also produces plug-ins for digital audio workstations (DAWs) and software for digital signal processors. The word "empirical" in its most positive interpretation means "designed from experience". This philosophy informs the design of Empirical Labs' high-quality products, which are made in the USA and calibrated and tested by hand.
Freshly delivered, the Empirical Labs EL8X-S Distressor is best installed in a 19" rack, where it requires two height units. At the rear, connect the power cables to the power supply and loop the two units into the two signal paths with insert cables. Both jack and XLR sockets are provided for this purpose. In addition, connect the link-out of the first unit to the link-in of the second unit and vice versa using the included balanced cables. For the stereo image link, flip the corresponding switch on both units and set the input and output levels of both distressors to the same value. When busy sound engineers have found their favourite settings, they can make a note of them on a template available for download from the ELI website (https://www.empiricallabs.com/wp-content/uploads/distrecall.pdf).
