The green screamer pedal found on countless guitarists' boards is famous for boosting the mids and cutting the lows, which is why bass players tend to steer clear of it. But the designers at EarthQuaker Devices figured the classic circuit had more to offer, so they took its foundations and made a modern, bass-first overdrive/distortion with it. The Blumes is a low signal shredder, a pedal built to get bassists excited – but guitarists looking for extra low-end punch will get what they came for too. With three very different operating modes, it's incredibly versatile, capable of turning a clean tone into a crushing wave of gain – or almost any sound in between.
The flexibility of the EarthQuaker Devices Blumes is rare for a "screamer"-style pedal. Its three operating modes - symmetrical LED, asymmetrical silicon, and diode-free op-amp boost - essentially offer different levels of clipping, and as such each delivers a distinct type of distortion. Soft clipping produces a smooth overdrive sound, while hard clipping gives guitarists a heavy distortion that's often associated with high-gain styles. The Blumes' first setting, LED clipping, produces exactly that aggressive, cutting distortion tone. The second is a pure op-amp boost, offering a clear, unclipped signal, while the last mode, using silicon diodes, delivers a warm, compressed tone that most closely recalls the classic screamer sound, but with a solid, clean, and cutting bass foundation.
A screamer-style pedal is the perfect partner for a real tube amp, adding the necessary compression and changing the dynamic feel in a big way – the same goes for the EarthQuaker Devices Blumes. Thanks to its innovative design, though, it also pairs well with other amp types and will satisfy anyone who doesn't want to sacrifice low-end punch or a solid mid boost. Alongside the prime candidates - bass and guitar - the Blumes can also be used very effectively with other sound sources, especially synths, whose line-levels signals often benefit from a bit of subtle drive with plenty of low end, without heavy distortion that would compress the synths' own harmonics.
EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.
The EarthQuaker Devices Blumes is not only special because of its sonic capabilities – its usability also makes it well-suited to the needs of modern musicians. It combines noiseless, relay-based circuitry with a soft-touch footswitch and true bypass switching, so it will leave the original sound untouched if it is deactivated. Thanks to its internal bipolar power supply, it has almost endless headroom for boosting the signal and a solid amount of gain on tap too. In a pedalboard signal chain, a drive or distortion pedal should sit before reverbs and delays, with modulation effects added to taste. The Blumes works with any standard pedalboard power supply, drawing 25mA at 9V DC.
