Tube compressor with DAW control

The Antelope A4-1B is a single-channel optical compressor that combines the warm sound of classic tube technology with the precision of modern digital control thanks to its all-analogue signal path whose parameters can be regulated digitally. This "best of both worlds" synergy is made possible by the A4-1B's patented motorised potentiometers, which operate in a fully analogue fashion and allow the user to make stepless adjustments that are then digitally stored and can be recalled with 100% accuracy later on via the plugin that is included in this complete bundle. The values for threshold, ratio, attack, release, and make-up gain can thus be controlled, automated, and stored as presets directly from the user's DAW. The Antelope A4-1B's all-tube push-pull power stage in turn delivers the harmonically rich sound and low distortion levels that users have long come to expect from high-quality analogue studio gear.

Analogue sound meets digital precision

When they look at the Antelope A4-1B, users will no doubt be instantly reminded of numerous classic analogue compressors thanks to its rotary controls, illuminated VU meter (which can be set to indicate the input level, output level, or gain reduction in decibels). The A4-1B additionally features a versatile filter section that allows users to process the side chain signal using low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filters, while the frequency range can be steplessly adjusted between 18Hz and 15kHz. The A4-1B's custom input and output transformers add plenty of analogue warmth and character to the signal, and the SC link also allows the user to create a stereo compressor by linking two A4-1Bs together. What is more, the Antelope A4-1B can be calibrated via plugin, which means that the user's presets can be recalled with complete accuracy for years and years, and the Opto-Cell test system both provides automatic calibration and ensures consistent compression - particularly helpful when two units are combined.

Total recall for analogue fans

The Antelope A4-1B compressor is primarily aimed at professional studios and users who want to combine classic analogue sound quality with a precise and fully reproducible workflow, including the "total recall" of every parameter. Since the compressor is also virtually inaudible when operated at moderate settings, users can even run it while recording, but where things really get exciting is during the mix, where the A4-1B allows a seamless A/B comparison between two settings - an impressive feat for an analogue compressor. In terms of both sound and features, the Antelope A4-1B is a top-tier solution, configured to provide a premium-quality sound, and its specially developed switching power supply preserves the life of the tubes and allows hum-free use anywhere in the world.

About Antelope Audio

Antelope Audio is a manufacturer of professional audio equipment that was founded by developer Igor Levin, who invented the famous AardSync clock generator with which his then-company Aardvark made waves in the world of audio engineering at the end of the 20th century. In 2005, Igor Levin went – as he himself put it – back to his roots and continued to develop the AardSync concept. The result of this development work was the "Oven Clock", a word clock generator that is kept at a constant temperature of 64.5°C to provide increased stability and improve jitter performance. The newly founded Antelope Audio caused a similar splash in 2005 with its OCX Clock Generator. Today, Antelope Audio, which is based in Sofia, Bulgaria, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality audio interfaces and AD/DA converters and includes big names such as Rihanna, Jay-Z, and the Wu-Tang Clan among its users.

Transparent compression ensured

Optical compressors like the Antelope A4-1B are particularly suitable for dynamically processing the human voice, with good values for compressing a vocal recording being a ratio of 3:1, an attack time of 10ms, and a release time of 100ms. The objective here is to bring level peaks under control and achieve a uniform volume level without colouration of the natural sound. The Antelope A4-1B can be used to great effect when connected in series with an FET or VCA compressor, both of which are easy to adjust: The latter of these picks up the signal peaks, while the opto-compressor connected downstream provides clean, transparent compression of the overall signal in the 3dB to 7dB range. This same combination is ideal for compressing electric bass signals in order to provide more presence and consistency without completely losing either the transients or the sound of the strings being plucked.
