Portable 16-in/8-out stagebox

The Allen & Heath DX168/X is a portable expander for adding remote I/O to a range of the English manufacturer's mixing desks, including the Allen & Heath dLive, Avantis, and SQ; it can also be docked with the AHM-64 audio matrix processor. The DX168/X is equipped with 16 remotely controllable microphone preamps, each of which has its own phantom power indicator LED, and eight line outputs. All of the sockets are in XLR format, and Allen & Heath also offers optional mounting brackets to allow rack installation. The DX168/X's sturdy metal housing features a carrying handle and shock absorbers at each end, and since the whole thing weighs in at just 5kg, it is very easy to carry and transport.

An expansion for the Allen & Heath universe

The compact Allen & Heath DX168/X stagebox is eminently suited to smaller events or for use in larger setups as an on-stage or front-of-house I/O expansion. To this end, it is equipped with two network ports, allowing several units to be interconnected and operated simultaneously – either by daisy-chaining the signal to additional stageboxes or, for more critical applications in a dLive system, by creating a redundant connection to compatible hardware using two network cables. Despite this impressive versatility, however, the DX168/X still remains a plug-and-play solution that is intuitive to use and requires no manual IP assignment.

For setups of all sizes

The fact that the Allen & Heath DX168/X is compatible with so many of the company's other devices makes it the ideal all-round stagebox, equally suitable as a standalone solution for small events and an extension for large systems where the main stagebox might not provide sufficient connections. And users who start small with an Allen & Heath SQ mixer and work their way up to a bigger mixing desk like an Avantis or dLive can keep and continue to use their DX168/X – a sustainable way of doing things that makes it easier on the wallet as well.

About Allen & Heath

Allen & Heath started building mixing consoles in London in 1969 and made a name for themselves hand-building mixers for some of the greatest bands of the era, such as Pink Floyd. Since 2014, Allen & Heath has been part of the Audiotonix Group, which in turn is managed by the company Electra Partners. Allen & Heath's headquarters are in Penryn, Cornwall (UK), where production takes place, alongside a second factory in China. For scalable I/O setups

Depending on what mixing desk is used, employing one or more DX168/X stageboxes opens up different possibilities: When combined with Allen & Heath's flagship dLive model, up to six DX168/X units can be operated – four can be connected directly to the MixRack and two additional units managed via the Surface, providing a total of 96 inputs and 48 outputs. The new Avantis console supports two DX168/X units via the SLink port and up to sixteen via a DX Link card and/or DX Hubs. Allen & Heath SQ consoles can also run two DX168/X units via the SQ SLink port, while a DX Hub allows a further eight units to be controlled, the inputs of which can be freely patched to the 48 input channels of an SQ console.

Stevig, degelijk en goede audiokwaliteit

In combinatie met mijn Allen & Heath SQ-5 gebruik ik nu twee DX168/X apparaten. Dit werkt snel en soepel. Denk er wel om dat je degelijke cat6 kabel gebruikt. Bij een theatershow gebruikte ik een haspel met 50 meter cat5 installatiedraad, daarmee wilde de DX niet goed verbinden met de SQ5. Met inmiddels een goede cat6 haspel met neutrik connectoren geen probleem meer gehad.

We're using the DX168/X to connect to an Allen & Heath SQ5. Physically, it's quite small - smaller than I expected and there is a rack mount accessory for mounting into a 19" rack. The setup was really simple, connect the SQ5 (or other compatible mixer) to the DX168/X using a Cat5/6 cable with ethercon connectors. Connect power to the DX168/X and turn on. Go into the IO screen and then select SLink - from here you can assign the inputs or outputs to channels.

The quality is great as you'd expect from Allen & Heath and I don't see any con. The only thing to worth noting is if you chain this with some of the older generation 48KHz accessories, the DX168/X will also run at 48KHz instead of 96KHz. In this situation a SLink expansion card is probably the way to go so you don't reduce the quality of the DX168/X.

Unfortunately you need these for use with the sq5, but I'm really happy with 2 of these in their separate racks wherever I need them on stage. Absolutely solid and has not let me down. Only annoying feature is having to get the back lid off every time to connect the cat5 cable

Good to use with SQ

If you have a SQ product.
Buy this. Easy to use. Prices almost the same with very good snake cable.
But not carry like a myanmar snake to work. Just small cat6 cable.
